Growing up isn’t easy. Many young people face daily tormenting and bullying, leading them to feel like they have nowhere to turn. This is especially true for LGBTQ kids and teens, who often hide their sexuality or gender identity for fear of bullying. Without other openly LGBTQ adults and mentors in their lives, they can't imagine what their future may hold. In many instances, LGBTQ adolescents are taunted — even tortured — simply for being themselves.
While many of these youth couldn’t see a positive future for themselves, we can. The It Gets Better Project was created to show young LGBTQ people the levels of happiness, potential, and positivity their lives will reach – if they can just get through their teen years. The It Gets Better Project wants to remind young people in the LGBTQ community that they are not alone — and it WILL get better.
Social media continues to dominate the IGBP’s outreach efforts. In 2016, IGBP content was shared by over 1.9 million individuals to reach more than 157.6 million people online. This represents a 59.3% increase over 2015. Unique visits to ItGetsBetter.org capped at 447,292 sessions, and nearly half of web traffic originated from outside the U.S.
and the IGBP joined forces to collect messages of hope and inspiration for those directly impacted by the Pulse tragedy in Orlando, FL. Over 2,000 messages were collected, and approximately 20 were converted into postcards, which were distributed by the Orlando Police Department
during the Orlando Pride Festival in November 2016. The most inspiring messages were combined into a beautiful poster that is now on display at the Orlando Police Department.
Expansion of the It Gets Better International Affiliate Network
included the recruitment of new representation in Peru, Canada, India, and Brazil. The IGBP is now present in 17 countries around the world, including Austria, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Greece, Italy, Mexico, Moldova, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States.
